1. How to Assemble Indoor NFT Hydroponics Kit?

Refer to this video for detailed step-by-step instructions
  • Place the NFT channels on the stand and fix all the plumbing pipes.
  • Place the submersible pump in the reservoir tank and connect the pump to the plumbing pipe with a valve, that supplies water into the NFT channels.
  • Bring an electrical board near the kit with at least three sockets.
  • Connect the submersible pump's power plug to the timer and then fix the timer into the power socket. (the timer runs the pump at programmed times)
  • Insert the transparent air tube into the reservoir through the lid. Attach the air stone to this end of the tube.
  • Attach the other end of the tube to the air pump. Place the air pump outside the NFT set up in a dry area and connect the plug to the power source.
  • Now it's time to set up the lights. Hang the lights using cable ties and connect all the lights with the help of inbuilt connectors. Then connect the power cable to the lights and plug it into a power source.
This completes the physical set-up of the NFT kit. 

2. How to Start Growing Plants

There are 4 simple steps involved in growing plants from seeds. Seed germination, Hardening the sapling, Transplanting, Monitoring & Maintenance.

a. Seed Germination

1. Place one seed germination plug in each net pot without removing the outer cover. Then add 30 to 50 ml water to the plug to expand it completely.

2. Sow 3-4 seeds around 1/2 cm deep in the germination plug. Place the net pots in a tray or plate and keep the tray in a warm and dark place to speed up the  germination process.

3. Keep the germination plug moist by spraying 5 - 10 ml of water once or twice a day (depending upon the weather in your area). The seeds will start to germinate in 3 to 7 days time. 

b. Hardening 

  1. Once the seeds have germinated, start exposing them to morning and evening sun for couple of hours a day. And increase sure the exposure gradually.
  2. Provide 10 - 15 ml of (regular or nutrient) water to the saplings everyday.
  3. For next 1 week, keep increasing the sun exposure gradually till the saplings develop 6-8 leaves.
  4. Once the sapling develops 6-8 leaves it is ready to be transplanted.

NOTE: Prepare a 500 ml nutrient solution by adding 1 ml each of N, K and P to 500 ml of water. Use this solution, once on alternate days to water your plants. Rest of the times use plain water. 

c. Transplanting



1. You can place this NFT kit anywhere, as the light requirement for plants is met with the help of grow lights.


2. Fill the reservoir with 18 litres of water. Add 1 ml of N, K, P and 2 ml of Greens, and 1 ml of Nutes per litre of water.

3. Connect the submersible pump plug to a power source directly and switch it on to run the pump for 3-5 minutes to ensure NFT channels are filled with nutrient water. Make sure to switch off the pump once the water starts to collect back in the reservoir.



4. Switch on the grow lights and transfer the net pots to the planting spaces in the lid of NFT channels.


  • Once the NFT channels are filled with nutrient water connect the submersible pump to the timer and then the timer to the power source and supply power continuously. 
  •  The timer should always be in Auto mode to run the submersible pump automatically.

d. Monitoring & Maintenance

1. Aeration

Turn on the air pump for an hour twice a day (preferably morning and evening)
 

2. Reservoir Water Level

Check the water level in the reservoir 2-3 times in a week and make sure the submersible pump is always inside water

3. Nutrient Addition

Add 1 ml of N, K, & P  and 2 ml Greens, 1 ml Nutes in one liter of water. Use it to top up the reservoir when the water level is low.

4. Lights Usage.

Most plants require around 12-16 hours of light a day during the vegetative stage. Do not exceed 16 hours on any given particular day.

5. Monitoring Plants

It's a best practice to monitor plants health frequently. Regular observation enables early detection of diseases and pest.

Common issues you might face while growing.

GERMINATION (LANKY GROWTH)

When the germinated seedlings are not kept under the light their stem becomes thin & long (lanky), eventually the growth is reduced and the plants may die. To avoid this provide sunlight in the mornings and evenings after germination when the sun is not harsh.

HIGH WATER TEMPERATURE
When the water temperature is high plant roots can burn or rot. At times of such high temperatures make sure to place the system in shade.


LACK OF DISSOLVED OXYGEN

Insufficient oxygen availability can lead to root suffocation and promote the growth of anaerobic bacteria, potentially causing root diseases and negatively impacting plant health. Make sure to use the air pump regularly to have optimal oxygen levels.

LEAKAGES AT JOINTS


At the time of fixing the plumbing connections make sure to connect them tightly to avoid any kind of leakages thereafter. Use any upvc solvent or m-seal to stop the leakage.

2. Water Level

Check the water level once a week and make sure the roots are inside water all the time.

3. Nutrient Addition

Add 2 ml of N, K, & P in one liter of water and use it to top up the pipe when the water level is low.

1. What is a NFT System?

Simply put, in NFT hydroponics a thin film of water rich in nutrients is re-circulated in pipes (generally called channels) which are absorbed by plant roots to grow.

While growing plants in the soil we use various methods and tools, e.g. – we would use a tractor or a cultivator for plowing the soil and a seed tape or dibble for sowing the seeds in the ground. Similarly growing plants by hydroponics includes various machinery and methods, amongst many like an Ebb and flow, drip system, aeroponics, and many more DWC is one such method.

1. What is a DWC System?

Complementary to the name itself, Deep/Direct water culture is a method in which the plant roots remain soaked in water throughout their development period. 


The liquid solution in which the plants are dipped contains three main elements, namely-

  • Oxygen
  • Water
  • Nutrients {Mainly NPK (Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Potassium), Micronutrients (Manganese, Zinc, Copper, Chloride, Boron, Iron), Mesa nutrients (Calcium, Sulphur, Magnesium)}

2. How does a DWC system work?

    • A certain number of plants are placed in a tray. The plants are placed in such a way that the roots of the plants hang down from the small pits.
    • The water reservoir (bucket) filled with the nutrient solution is led into the tray where plants are placed through a pipe/tube.
    • Plant roots absorb the required nutrients from the flowing water, which is sufficiently provided, throughout the process.
    • An air pump is used for availing oxygen to the roots and this air pump is the most important appliance in the whole system of hydroponics. The absence of an air pump would either leave the plant deoxygenated or even lead to its death.

Remember: The nutrient and the water requirement of every plant may vary depending upon 

its size and type.

3. How to assemble a DWC System?

    • Start with preparing the nutrient solution, once ready check the pH, remember the favorable pH shall be between 5.5 to 6.5
    • Place the plants in the net pots and fix the net pots in the tray through the hollow pits.
    • From the water reservoir connect the hose and towards the end of it attach the air stone, which would enable producing tiny bubbles.
    • After putting up all the above-mentioned apparatus together you can put the system under the light.

4. What are the benefits of a DWC System?

  • Reduces the use of fertilizer, as the plants are always drenched in the nutrient solution.
  • Very slight amount of maintenance after setting up for once
  • Assembling is comparatively easy.
  • Adequate nutrient absorption from the solution, improves cell growth rate.
  • The time required for plant growth is relatively low.
